What Is ‘Burning In’?
Burning In is the process of playing sound through a new set of headphones or speakers for an extended period of time to give the driver time to loosen up, much in the same way as you might walk around the house for a few days in a new pair of running shoes to break them in.

One obvious way to burn a new set of headphones in is to just use them as you would and play music through them. Eventually, the drivers and cones will loosen up and the sound signature will be in its final state.

There is nothing wrong with this, but in order to speed this process up many people will put their cans on an extended Burn In run. This might be playing music, white noise, pink noise, sweeps or drum fills to give the drivers an intensive, thorough workout in one sitting, therefore being able to enjoy their new set of headphones in the quickest possible time.

Whatever noise you play through your drivers, it is generally accepted that you should set the volume to about 15-25% louder than you would normally listen to music. This is dependent on your particular drivers though, and you should be careful not to overdrive them enough to cause them damage. Headphones should not be on your head whilst you are undertaking a Burn In cycle as not to damage your ears.

  • Before I had to search for white noise myself and even after that I had to still play some music to hit all the frequencies, but now I can just leave this playing and be sure it will do the job. This is a complete burn in set of sounds! Thanks!

  • Used this as an initial burn-in test since it ain't as aggressive as most break in tracks, finished up with some Sinewaves from the Head-FI forums and the results are the best i've had. would love to see a track with another hour of sinewaves and maybe some white noise after that also
