How To Put An iPhone In DFU Mode & DFU Restore Your iPhone!

In this video, a former Apple tech shows you how to put an iPhone into DFU mode. Then, we demonstrate how to perform a DFU restore on an iPhone 7, but the steps in this video work for all models of the iPhone, with one catch:

On iPhone 6s or earlier, you press and hold the home button with the power button. On the iPhone 7 or later, you perform a DFU restore using the volume down button instead.

Important correction for PC users: To manually choose a file to restore from using iTunes, hold Shift and click “Restore iPhone”. We said to hold “Alt” by mistake in the video. We apologize for any confusion!

Before performing a DFU restore, we recommend backing up your iPhone. Check out this tutorial to learn how to back up an iPhone:

To put an iPhone into DFU mode, plug it into your laptop and open iTunes. Next, press and hold the power button and the volume down button (iPhone 7 and later) or the Home button (iPhone 6s and earlier) for 8 seconds.

After 8 seconds, release the power button and wait until iTunes says, “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.” At this point, let go of the volume down button or Home button. Your iPhone’s display should be completely back. If it doesn’t start from the beginning.

Now, restore your iPhone using iTunes, either by allowing iTunes to install the latest version of iOS, or by using an iOS firmware version downloaded from this website:

Wait for the status bars to complete, then set your iPhone up again or restore from a backup! This process can take several minutes, so be patient!

We receive a lot of comments about specific error codes. If you get an error code when you try to put your iPhone in DFU Mode, check out Apple's database of error codes to see how the problem can be solved: @t

Usually, trying a different Lightning cable or USB port on your computer can make the error go away.

Important update for iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X users:

The DFU restore process for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X is slightly different. We recently created a second DFU mode video about how to DFU restore an iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus: @

We also updated our DFU article on @t to reflect those changes. If you have an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X, read this article to learn how to put your iPhone in DFU mode: @t

    Important correction for PC users:

To manually choose a file to restore from using iTunes, hold Shift and click "Restore iPhone". We said to hold Alt by mistake in the video.

If you have a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15, you'll use Finder instead of iTunes. Open Finder on your Mac — your iPhone should appear under "Locations".

The battery is okayish so maybe it will be better for this too. But I really hope it fixes the camera. List any suggestions below, cause I have no wifi and I am putting data on when I am home.

  • I can't enter DFU mode with my SE. No matter how long or short i keep pressing the button(s), it always just reboot. The best i could do is enter restore mode, when on the screen is a laptop and lightning cable. Any ideas?

The problem with the phone is that the power button not working. It clicks and feels normal, and it reboot if i hold the power and home button, but wont turn on or off the screen when i press it. sometimes it acts like i holding down, but it's not jammed….If anyone had the same problem or know a solution, please write it….
