Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development

Piaget’s theory argues that we have to conquer 4 stages of cognitive development:
1. Sensori-Motor Stage
2. Pre-Operational Stage
3. Concrete Operational Stage
4. Formal Operational Stage

Only once we have gone through all the stages, at what age can vary, we are able to reach full human intelligence.

  • The “why” stage is my favorite. When my little cousins go through it, I try my best to answer their questions as accurately as I can. I don’t know if it truly helps them, but I love it. I remember when I explained that trees grow from seeds and my little cousins touches a small pine and says, “it’s a baby?” It was so sweet.

  • That tune is driving me nuts. The content is a gross generalisation. As if all of us have an above average IQ. Lots of people I know are largely stuck in the infant stage, and western society breeds egocentrism.

  • I summarized everything he said about Piaget's stages of development. I hope it helps :)!

Piaget's theory argues that we have to conquer 4 stages of cognitive development:
    Sensori-Motor Stage
    Pre-Operational Stage
    Concrete Operational Stage
    Formal Operational Stage

Only once we have gone through all the stages, at what age can vary, we are able to reach full human intelligence.

    Sensori-Motor Stage birth-2
We develop through experiences and movement our five senses. Our brain wants to see hear smell taste and touch as much as possible.
We become aware of things beyond our own body and then as we get older we learn to do things intentionally
We become curious about everything. We want to smell flowers, taste food, listen to sounds, and talk to strangers to explore more.
Usually egocentric (perceives the world in own p.o.v)
KEY MILESTONE- is the development of working memory (in Piaget terms or our realization of object permanence.)

    Pre-Operational Stage 2-7
We learn to speak and understand words, images, and gestures are symbols for something else.
Our thinking is mainly categorized for symbolic functions and intuitive thoughts. We have lots of fantasies and believe objects are alive.
AREN'T able to apply specific cognitive operations  (that's why its called pre-operational)
Age 4 most of us become curious and ask many questions and want to know everything. (Birth of primitive reasoning// Piaget called it the intuitive age because while we realize that we have a vast amount of knowledge, we have no idea how we acquired it.)
Our thinking in this stage is still egocentric (we think others see the world like we do and still don't understand that they see it differently)

    Concrete Operational Stage 7-11
We discover the logic and develop concrete cognitive operations such as sorting objects in a certain container. (Ex- inductive reasoning meaning if we see someone eating a cookie we can draw a conclusion and then make a generalization)
We understand if we pour juice from a normal glass to a taller one the amount stays the same or that 3+5=8 so then 8-3=5
We now know that we can reverse action by doing the opposite. (Ex- we apply them in  conversation activities when we learn to write and in school.)
Our brain learns to rearrange our thoughts to classify and build concrete operational mental structures.
As a result, we get to know ourselves better and begin to understand that our thoughts and feelings are unique and not necessarily those of others that means we learned to put ourselves in someone else's shoes

    Formal Operational Stage 12+
We now have the ability to think more rationally about abstract concepts and hypothetical events.
Our advanced cognitive abilities allow us to understand abstract concepts such as success and failure, love and hate.
We form a deeper understanding of our own identity and our morality.
We now also think we understand why people behave the way they do and become more compassionate.
Our brain now can do deductive reasoning meaning we can compare two statements and reach a logical generalization.
Our new mental skills allow us to plan our life systematically and prioritize and we can make assumptions about events that have no necessary relation to reality.
We can now philosophize and just think about thinking itself.
A new sense of identity creates egocentric thoughts and some start to see an imaginary audience watching them all the time.
Piaget believed in lifelong learning but insisted that we have a formal operational stage of the final stage of our cognitive development.
