It never fails to amaze me what the EX 600 is capable of. I own a mess of pricier earphones but I’m always finding myself, time and time again, returning to my tried and true EX600’s. The EX 600 is the poor mans version of the old Sony flagship, the MDR EX 1000. Between the 1000 and the 600 sits the EX 7550 which is supposed to sound a lot like the EX 1000 only with a more rolled off treble.
For me the EX 600 is a very special earphone in that it proves hands down you don’t have to spend your life savings to attain great sound. At well under 200 USD the the EX 600 is a sonic gem amongst the overly crowded market of sub 200 IEM’s.
It’s strongest suit for me is the crazy way it images. It’s one of the very few IEM’s I’ve heard that I can say images almost exactly like a headphone. Sound stage is tall, wide and deep and instrument separation and positioning is exemplary putting it on par with the Ocharaku SUI and surpassed only by the mammoth priced 1plus2.
So besides the imaging and sound stage what do these IEM’s sound like? Well, with the exception of a slight treble tilt the mids and bass sound like absolutely nothing. Yes folks, the EX 600 easily fits well within the parameters of being classed a neutral IEM. Mid range sounds quite linear and dry with excellent detail retrieval while the bass extends deep with just a very slight touch of reverb in the mid bass giving the lows a hint of texture and the mids a very slight hint of warmth and keeping it from falling into the analytical camp. The highs extend nicely and are aggressive giving the EX 600 a treble tilt. Although extended, unfortunately, the mid and upper highs suffer grain making the highs sound a touch overly metallic and splashy at times. Think lack of separation and detail in the upper registers.
Note decay is blistering fast surpassed by only the SUI and the 1Plus2. Because of it’s blistering speed PRAT is off the charts and overly aggressive rock and metal sounds wonderful on these IEM’s. Sibilance can sometimes rear it’s ugly head but the upper mid range is far better controlled then the SUI. If this sounds like a deal breaker for you don’t write the EX 600 off to quickly. In my experience with a little patience and tip rolling the right type of tip can kill the sibilance off quite nicely.
Who would have thought Sony, the company long known for overpricing their products, would be the company to prove that great sounding gear doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg. Certainly not me. Sennheiser, Westone, Audio Technica take note. Sony still knows how to engineer great sounding earphones
